Kimi Antonelli has described the day Toto Wolff offered him the Mercedes seat, in an office at Silverstone, before Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari had been announced. Antonelli, then 17, was testing a Formula 3 car at Silverstone to learn the circuit ahead of his Formula 2 season. Recalling the meeting, he says Wolff went straight to it: "Look, Lewis is going to Ferrari, and we are thinking of putting you in the car for next year." Antonelli had not started a Formula 2 race at that point.
